Outlining Dynamic Light Scattering

Particle analysers rely on a range of analytical techniques to determine the dimensions and the mechanical or biochemical characteristics of various samples. Emulsions and particles in suspension are commonly measured using dynamic light scattering (DLS), a method capable of defining the size and shape of particles, as well as their concentration and/or vector when dispersed in a fluid. This method can also commonly be applied to measure the electro-kinetic characteristics of a colloid or dispersive medium.

Dynamic Light Scattering Working Principles

Dynamic light scattering is accomplished by directing a light source, such as a monochromatic polarised laser beam, into a sample comprised of nanoparticles and a dispersion, or emulsion. The beam will diffract or scatter off the sample particles and fluctuate through the suspension in all directions. This scattered light emerges through a final polarising filter for dynamic imaging equipment to produce measurements and images based on the geometries and distribution of molecules throughout the fluid. It is also possible to measure the properties of particles in emulsion over time, and under the influence of electro-kinetic forces. By applying incident light into the sample at intervals, it is possible to analyse changes in molecular concentration and distribution of the sample, thus informing research into Brownian motion of particles and allowing analysts to perform accurate zeta potential measurement. Dynamic light scattering is a well-established measurement technique for determining particle or emulsion characteristics. It is crucial for the analysis of samples on the submicron scale, with industry innovations continuing to provide equipment capable of analysing smaller materials. Current dynamic light scattering technology allows for the accurate measurement of molecules on the nanoscale.
